Highly recommend Rudolph HVAC. I followed the recommendation from another parent, and used him to fix my AC. He charged only $105 to fix my AC , while VA HVAC was asking $1500 to replace the whole thing. He is honest, professional, and very knowledgeable. The number for Rudolph HVAC is 703-981-8633. http://rudolphshvac.com/ |

One advice is to check the license (and better insurance) before letting them to work on your equipments. Last time, my house almost caught fire when someone (without mentioning names) tried to "fix" my air conditioning unit. It can be dangerous. |

We have used A & T Heating and Air Conditioning for several years. The company is licensed and insured. The price is reasonable by comparing with other companies but might be higer than no licensed handyman. The company could be reached at (703) 803-8822 . |

We have been using McCarthy Service (http://mccarthyservice.com/) for several years, and most of neighbors use the same company. Our air conditioning unit broke last night. We called them this morning, and they came and fixed it in the afternoon. |

Cathy, Please do not buy home warranty program like AHS (American Home Shield) since they are all fake services end up not fixing any problems, but applying bandits. Instead, pay for contract service from a decent A/C and heating firm. I have been with Mann-In Heating and A/C for almost 10 years and I have a peace of mind. They fill freon free of charge when your unit is in need, provide two visits per year and whenever your A/C and heating is not working, they would come for free service. Their number is 703-263-1200 and they are not the cheapest, but one of decent firms. Liang Peng |

Last week, my A/C is broken. Normally, I use Mr. Sau Chung's service (703-868-1328). But he is not available (in China). So I called Eddy Lin 林時寬先生 (MOBILE: 703-424-1940) thanks to the other parent's reference on this forum. He found out the controller and fan are broken. He ordered the new parts which cost about $265 for both parts. He charge the labor for $100 and $30 for visit fee. He came to my house 3 times to get this fixed (because of ordering parts). I think the rate is very reasonable. Plus 3 month warranty. Steve |

Bad experience: We had Marcelo Lopes AC. worked on our AC repairing recently. The job he did is very rough, and we don't think he is honest about what he did for us. We get his referral from the buying site. We don't think we will use his service anymore. |

First, there are two pipes connected to evaporator (inside unit). If you use your hand to hold the thick one that is covered by insulation foam and feel not too cool, it means the refrigerant drops due to leaking. Second, not all compressors nowadays are using freon as refrigerant. If the unit is new or less than 5 years old, most likely it runs alternative. You need provide the service company with this information. Third, refrigerant is charged by weight it is incharged to the compressor. The freon itself is about $40/pound. You may well need 2 pounds. So $150 seems not surprising high, it is reasonable. The last, if this is NOT the first time you charge the refrigerant, you need to fix the leaking first. It will not last too long if otherwise. If you have to fix it, identifying the location becomes critical... ------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 May 2012 18:52:11 -0700 Subject: [hope-forum] AC Repair Price To: hope-forum@googlegroups.com Our AC does not work well today. I called an AC repair man and he said it probably needs more freon. He can come to add freon for me and would charge no more than $150. We have a small house and only one regular sized AC. Does anyone here know whether or not it is a reasonable price ? Thanks in advance for your advice. |

This is my lesson learned and would like to share with the community. Please check whether your AC tech has a license for HVAC. When our plumber (an American guy) came to fix our plumbing, our AC was broken as well that time. He told that his company could fix AC, too, and he gave us a reasonable price for a new installation. When a new AC was installed, weather was cool and we didn't use it. When weather became hot, it didn't work at the first time. I called him many times and sent many emails. He told me he would show up today, but didn't. I gave up hope with him. I talked with my lawyer friend today. Based on my friend's advice, the following is the email I sent him this evening (taken his (RXXX) and his wife (CXXX)'s real name away, and rest of email is exactly as what I sent to his wife, who handled their billing and emails): Hi, CXXX, I called you and RXX six times today and left 6 messages. I don't think I will call you again if your guys don't show up by tomorrow. It is very hot today, and the temperature has reached 90 degrees in our house. My patience has run low. If your guys want to come tomorrow, please give me a call early morning since I don't want to wait for your guys whole day again as today. RXXX asked me to wait for him today at home, but he never showed up yet (it is 6:49 PM now). I talked with my lawyer this afternoon and he will help me to handle the situation. Just let you know our plan first. If you don't show up or call me by tomorrow noon, I will hire someone else to fix it tomorrow afternoon, and will send you the bill. If you don't pay it, we will take you to General District Court, and Business Bureau. By the way, we checked your license as well. The VA state website may not be updated. However, it doesn't show you have a HVAC license, which wasn't what you told me when you installed our AC. Thanks. |
